Using avatars

Some bulletin boards allow you to use a custom avatar.  An avatar is an image or icon used to represent your online identity.  This bulletin board supports custom avatars, but your administrator might have them disabled.  You can customize your avatar by following these instructions.

Using a stock avatar

You can select a stock avatar by choosing the "My Profile" link from the toolbar on top.  Then select the "Edit My Profile."  Near the bottom of the page you should see the following:

Stock Avatar Image

You can select the image you want by choosing the radio button to the right of the image.  Depending on the customizations of your board, you might see images different from the ones above.  Once you select the image you want, click the submit button at the bottom of the page to save your settings.

Using a custom avatar

If you administrator has custom avatars enabled, you can use your own image to represent your avatar by following these steps.  You have two choice in terms of using your own avatar.  You can use an image hosted on another web server or you can upload your own image to this web server.

Using an avatar on another server

You can use your own avatar on another web server by following these steps.  When you go to the "My Profile" -> "Edit My Profile" page you should see the following:

Custom Avatar

Next to "Use custom avatar" select the "Yes" radio button.  Then next to the "URL of your avatar" field enter the entire URL of the avatar hosted on another web server.  Make sure to put the HTTP:// at the begining.  For example:

http://www.idealbb.com/images/logo.gif

Using an avatar that will be uploaded to this web server

If your administrator has enabled uploads on this board, you can upload your own image to represent your avatar.  You can do this by following these steps.

On the "My Profile" -> "Edit My Profile" page you should see a link

Upload avatar

Click the "Click here" link to go to the upload screen.

Upload Dialog

Click on the browse button to select a file and then click upload to copy it to the web server.  Once the file is uploaded, make sure that the "Use custom avatar" field is set to "Yes."

What to do if your avatar shows up as a red X?

If your avatar does not show up properly, then one of two things has happened.  Either your URL does not point to a valid image, or the administrator has deleted your file from the web server.   Go through the steps to upload a new image to correct the situation.
